An evening devoted to meeting new members and seeing samples of their work. Those who joined since last August are invited to this evening.
On behalf of Latow’s Program Committee, we invite new members to participate in a New Members’ Evening on Tuesday, February 19. It is an opportunity to get to know them better, to see some of their photography and learn about their interests. Time will be limited to 6 minutes, but sufficient, we think for us to see a sample of work: favourite subjects, new directions, challenges, whatever a New Member wants to share.
A separate invitation was given to the Masters Latow members: they are invited to participate in a portion of the evening dedicated to Masters portfolios. The idea is simple; they have earned the designation of Master at Latow and we’d like to see a selection of their favourite work in more than the usual limited set of a few images in an Evaluation. The five minute format can be fairly open. Masters may decide to describe their progression over time as a photographer or tell about changes in approach or subject matter, show something experimental or under-appreciated (by judges), award winners, whatever works.
The evening will be co-hosted by Marguerite Botting, Wanda Lane and Joyce Munro. We will handle introductions, moderate discussion and keep an eye on the clock.
All members in good standing are welcome.
At the AGB in the Studio Room.
Ever wonder why Adobe chose the icons they did for dodging and burning? Dodging and burning in the darkroom are as old as the craft itself and invaluable tools to enhance or pull out details in the negative otherwise lost in the print. Given the time of year; picture a scene with a clear blue sky with fluffy clouds, a snow-covered field and a lone and tired person standing in the shade shovelling the drive. How do you get a good print that otherwise would have the person and the drive lost in the blacks, and the field and sky with the cloud detail all washed out? Why, dodge and burn of course! Have an image that seems flat or lifeless? A little burn here and a little dodge there can bring it back to life. Bring your own troublesome negative or try one of ours.
